Awards for outstanding contribution

The awards to members of Penrith’s professional, business and community sectors over the Australia Day weekend were in recognition of the extraordinary efforts of busy people who dedicate time to helping community associations and activities, said Steve Willingale, acting CEO, of the Penrith Valley Economic Development Corporation.

“That these people were acknowledged, together with those so honoured in previous years, underscores the quality and character of the people of Penrith who devote their time to a wide range of activities and organisations; they strengthen the city’s sense of community,” he said.

“I am pleased to note Ross Fowler and John Bateman, whose involvement as directors of the Penrith Valley Economic Development Corporation Board (PVEDC) and other organisations have been honoured.”

Mr Fowler was awarded an OAM. He is the principal of Ross Fowler & Co Chartered Accountants, and has served as a councillor and mayor of Penrith City Council, chairman of Penrith Whitewater Stadium and has been director of the Australian Foundation for the Disabled.

Mr Bateman, a lawyer, with Bateman Battersby, is the Penrith City Australia Day Citizen of the Year. His involvement in the community, other than with the PVEDC, includes the Nepean Medical Research Foundation, Penrith Valley Sports Foundation, the Bateman Battersby Law Bursary, the Bateman Battersby Medical Research Medal and the Nepean Philanthropists group. He is the current chairman of the PVEDC.

“Dr Fred Cunliffe, a GP and obstetrician, the team doctor to Panthers for almost 20 years and the founder of the Riding for the Disabled, received an OAM, as did Jan Marchant for her efforts in helping people with a visual impairment mainly through her work with the 2RPH radio station dedicated to providing programs for the print-handicapped”, Mr Willingale said.

“Winners of an Australian Fire Service Medal were Clinton Jessop-Smith, who has served in many capacities with the Berkshire Park Rural Fire Brigade and played an integral role in the creation of the Cumberland Zone, and Stephen Weyman, group captain of the Cumberland Zone, life member of the Orchard Hills brigade and chairperson of the Bush Fire Management Committee.”

Mr Willingale said each of the recipients, in their own way, has contributed to safety and security, the welfare and the future of the city and its citizens. “Their concern, compassion and commitment has to be applauded,” he said.
